Rob had gotten up at five. Showered, shaved, dressed for field work. The weather was a bit blustery this morning from a front that had blown in, so heavy pants and a light rain shell in blue. His hair was a little longer than normal for Borlait, but that was mostly just the resorts demanding high and tight on the men and something equally disruptive on the women.
He looked more like a tourist. Dressed like it. It would make him stand out a little, but only against the background of people who were normally invisible and wanting to be left alone on their day off.
Sun would rise soon, but not that soon. Hopefully, Mac and the strange women had planned on getting up at six, then showering. Or fooling around before showering.
He made his way across the street and chose a spot with a view of the main hotel entrance out the window of a twenty-four-hour dive restaurant. Borlait days ran twenty-one standard hours, with local hours themselves sliced so that there were twenty-four of them in a day.
Sun would rise before seven, but he wanted to be in a position to handle things.
Helped that he had the front of the restaurant mostly to himself, with a few singles up at a bar facing the kitchen. Food wasnât all that great, but it was difficult to fuck up sausage and eggs in the first place, and he was just here to be out of sight when watching.
There was no way to tell what the stranger would do in the morning. She and Mac might lay in bed all morning and then finally make their way downstairs for brunch.
Rob had to presume that the cover of a wakeup call was to ensure that the stranger left at a reasonable time. And that he and Alicia could follow her.
If she just got a taxi, Alicia would probably be able to hack into their systems before it had taken off. Security on those sorts of things just wasnât prepared for the kinds of horsepower that a government-level spy service could bring to bear, which was why heâd brought her.
Rob was across the street in case the stranger decided to walk somewhere. Hopefully, not across the street to grab a bite as Rob would be trapped in the act of leaving and have to send Alicia.
He checked his watch. Ten minutes to six. Alicia should be awake.
He sent her a message.
* Just in case, you be dressed and ready for tailing someone shortly â R *
That way, he could simply walk right by the stranger if she did go for dive food, and Alicia could get involved. Not the best solution, but he didnât have any other resources.
His comm beeped.
* Understood. â A *
And she was awake so she could give Mac the wakeup call requested.
He sat back with his coffee as the waiter picked up the last of his food. He pretended to read the news as six oâclock came and went, uncertain as to what would happen next.
